Muranga County Government has started construction of a 7- storey Muranga Cancer Treatment and Research Center which will be the biggest and first in Kenya and with a capacity of 300 bed capacity.
Governor Mwangi Wa Iria on Thursday commissioned the construction of the Centre which will be constructed within 180 days.
The governor said his adminstration has already secured an agreement with a hospital in Spain to train oncologists and other staff who will be operating at the facility upon its completion.
“We shall advertise jobs for staff and then take them for attachment in Indian based Cancer Hospitals and Spain to tap knowledge and skills and then implement the knowledge to our people,” the governor said.
He said just like the ICU facility, the Center will be a complete labour based project safe for the procurement of metals in bid to save money and to beat the bureaucratic process that delays the projects.
“We have our our engineers who are qualified to supervise the construction, we know the source of sand is river, the source of building stones is quarries and we shall supervise the project to attain the best standards,” the county chief announced.
According to the governor all Muranga hospitals will have a specific disease to cater for to ensure that no resident goes outside Muranga to seek medical services.
Some of the medical equipment that will be at the facility include
Elekta Synergy Linear Accelerator, Agility 160 Multi-Leaf Collimation System, Hexapod Treatment Table (Robotic Localization System), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Cone Beam CT (CBCT)
Pinnacle, Treatment Planning System
Electronic Portal Imaging
3D Conformal Radiation Therapy and shall also be conducting Pap Smear Test.
“We shall go at all lengths to ensure that the facility gets the best equipment just like other foreign hospitals,” he added.
