Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has honoured former Kandara/Gatanga MP George Ndungu Mwichigi for his exemplary performance when he was the legislator.
The governor announced that the 4-storey medical facility in Kirwara orthopedic hospital which will be the first public hospital in Kenya will be named after the former MP whose ambitious revolutionary Kandara water project hit national and international airwaves.

The governor recognized the late Mwichigi’s devotion and sacrifice to the people of his constituents by holding harambees and using his own money to fund for the projects.
“There were no National Government Constituency Development Funds (NGCDF) but that did not stop the MP to seek funds to initiate serious development projects to both Kandara and Gatanga when they were under one Constituency; Kandara Constituency,” the governor told Kkonlinenews.co.ke.
Mr Mwichigi is remembered for his efforts for the water projects where to date over 40 years ago, the pipes he laid are currently used by locals to get safe clean drinking water.
At his time of reign, the MP who used to be paid Sh10000 sourced funds from Germany, United Kingdom and Canada to get money for the project while at the same time roughed up youth and women to provide labour since the project was meant for them.
The new medical facility which will be complete and functional by July next month will have its name changed from Kirwara Health Facility to George Mwichigi General and Orthopaedic Hospital offering treatment for various diseases but with a speciality for bones.

Orthopedic surgeons will treat the following diseases and conditions: fractures and dislocations, torn ligaments, sprains and strains, tendon injuries, pulled muscles and bursitis.
Other bone related issues which the hospital will cater for include: ruptured disks, sciatica, lower back pain and scoliosis, abnormalities of the fingers and toes and growth abnormalities, surgical management of degenerative joint disease, knock knees, bow legs, bunions and hammer toes, arthritis and osteoporosis, bone tumors, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy club feet and unequal leg length.
The governor said each hospital in the county will have a specific ailment to treat.
“At Muranga County Referral hospital we shall have Cancer and the main ICU center, Maragua cater for Asthama, Gatanga for orthopedic while Muriranjas will cater for children diseases,” the County boss said.
This is not the first time Wa Iria is honouring Muranga leaders since he named the iconic eye and dental hospital in Kenol after Kenneth Matiba.
