Kirinyaga journalists association leaders pledge to champion journalists’ rights

Members of Kirinyaga County Journalists Association, they held elections for the second time and Mr Githinji Mwangi elected as the chair

Kirinyaga County Journalists Association has held their second elections where Mr Mwangi Githinji retained his seat.

Mr Githinji was elected for the second time without objection, while Mr Irungu Mwangi was elected as the patron of the association.

Mr Johnson Muriithi was elected as the Vice Chairperson while Mr Boniface Thuku will be the Chief Whip, Mr Njuguna Kamoce the Secretary General while Mr Michuki Ngamau will serve as the Treasurer.

The leaders called on government and well wishers to consider journalists in their philanthropy deeds saying the scribes are always left out to suffer especially during the hard economic times brought about by Covid-19 pandemic.

They also called on members of the society not to see reporters as enemies of the people but as important people who unearth social vices in the community.

“No one care for journalists in the fight against Coronavirus despite being at risk, government is concentrating with doctors forgetting the roles played by media,” Mr Githinji said.

After elections, the leadership pledged to defend the rights and plights of members saying the scribes have undergone untold sufferings which includes and not limited to illegal and unwarranted sacking.

They also pledged to remain unbowed by threats and intimidations from politicians and other stakeholders in efforts to inform the society on various happenings and injustices in the society.
