Esther Mwihaki Kamau a former Ntv and Radio Maria correspondent has shown the mighty ruling party Jubilee a serious wave of dust in the just concluded Gaturi by elections.
Ms Kamau garnered over 4000 votes defeating a seasoned but controversial politician Rosemary Wakuthii Njine whose campaigns was full of heavy government machinery flavoured by government heavy weights led by Water PS Irungu Wairagu who camped at Gaturi under the guise of inspecting water projects to campaign.
Others were political elite Governor Mwangi Wa Iria who branded vehicles with the name of Jubilee and photos of his name and those of the President displayed in the caravans.
Other than receiving huge lump some of monies to prove the Jubilee government’s muscles, Ms Wakuthii who has just exchanged the tag of a perennial loser with Ms Kamau, she had also received goodies like avocado tree seedlings to woe voters to elect her.
Ms Mwihaki vied using a village political party Peoples Empowerment Party owned by Gatundu South lawmaker Moses Kuria after being defeated by Ms Wakuthii during the party primaries.
In essence, the youth defeated a political giant while Mr Kuria singlehandedly stopped the reggae for the whole Jubilee battalion whose party leader is President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Ms Mwihaki ventured into the murky world of politics in 2017 when she lost in party primaries held on March that year. She vied as an independent candidate but became a distant third with the late Kiiru Mbembe winning the election and Ms Wakuthii becoming second.
After an opportunity came knocking with the death of Mr Mbembe, Ms Mwihaki again tried her lack and this time being the youngest MCA Gaturi ever had.
Although she complained of police harassment and use of adminstration to discourage her supporters during the elections day, Ms Mwihaki triumphed and emerged victorious.
The win by Mr Kuria’s party sends a strong signal that the next Mt Kenya kingpin could still come from Kiambu and Gatundu South Constituency to be precise, where the President who has the leadership mantle hails from.
Mr Kuria camped in Gaturi and camped for Ms Mwihaki making Muranga County his second home.
