Senate Majority Whip and Muranga Senator Irungu Kangata says he blocked the arrest of Tanga Tanga adherents MPs Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu) and Alice Wahome (Kandara) who were to be arrested following the Kenol town skirmishes that left two people dead.
The order to arrest the two was issued by Inspector General of police Hillary Mutyambai who accused them with mobilizing goons who caused mayhem leading to the death of the two youths and dozens injured.
In a public statement, the IG directed police to track down and arrest the two lawmakers and to track motor vehicles that were reportedly used to ferry goons and detain them to assist in the investigations.
However during Mashujaa day celebrations held on Tuesday October 20 2020, at Ihura stadium, the Senator announced that he advised authorities to abandon its quest to have the two arrested saying they had the freedom of expression.
“I told government to reconsider their decision of arresting the two leaders due to their freedom of expression,” he said.
But the Senator pleaded with leaders from across the political divide not to overstretch the freedom of expression for harmony and peaceful coexistence of locals.
He mooted for sober mature politics devoid of hate and incitement reminding leaders that they will not hold their elective positions forever calling for issue based politics.
“When I see politicians fight to an extent of using our youths to kill each other, I wonder whether they think they shall hold the positions for eve,” The Whip said.
MP Nyoro attended the ceremony and called on youth to desist from being used by politicians to cause fracas.
